Sulegång Culture and Nature Center –
development of buildings
for course activities 

Daniel and Ann Harrysson run Aporia Dagvaerke naturae HB in Sulegång, a historic undivided village from the 1500s where the farm's character and cultural environment constitute an important part of the place's identity. The farm has three larger residential houses, two of which are rented out during the summer and used for overnight stays in connection with course activities. The activities include courses in traditional ecological knowledge, such as hedge fencing, baking in a wood-fired oven, felting, building preservation, and meadow management.

Today, the potential of the activities is limited by the fact that the residential houses and the standalone toilet and shower building lack sufficient heating, insulation, and frost protection. This means that the buildings must be closed during autumn and winter, which in turn limits the opportunities to offer attractive accommodations during larger parts of the year.

Within the project, investments are being made to make the farm's houses usable year-round in an energy-efficient manner. The residential houses will be equipped with heat pumps for efficient heating as well as water heaters and frost-protected pipes. The standalone toilet and shower building will receive a new roof and better insulation. Additionally, a new relaxation room will be built in connection with the sauna and shower, which enhances the farm's attractiveness for both tourists and course participants.

Project goals

The purpose of the project is to strengthen the business viability and development potential of Sulegång as a culture and nature center by enabling rental and course activities even during the colder months of the year. By creating functional year-round environments in existing buildings, the farm can become more self-sufficient and offer more services and activities to visitors during larger parts of the year.

The goal is to increase the number of rented weeks and long weekends by about ten occasions per year, which corresponds to approximately 250 new guest nights, as well as to broaden the course offerings with nature and cultural historical education such as restoration of meadows and pastures, archaeology, and building preservation. With increased occupancy, conditions for increased employment in the activities are created. The project will also enable thematic experience weekends where practical activities are combined with lectures about the farm's history and the landscape's cultural heritage.
