Accessibility adapted
disc golf course
To facilitate for the elderly and people with limited mobility to use the disc golf course in Östra Ryd, it will be accessibility adapted.
About the project
The Östra Ryds IF association has established a disc golf course that has been well visited since it was created in 2021. They have made adjustments for children and female players/juniors with front tee placements on 10 of 18 holes to make the course suitable for many different players. They have also recently started ”try disc golf for 60+” which has been very appreciated. Here, the association sees that disc golf can be a way to encourage the elderly to engage in spontaneous sports. However, many passages on the course and on pathways between holes are very hilly and rocky, which also becomes slippery when it is a bit wet. This makes it very difficult for people with limited mobility to get around the course. To facilitate for the elderly to play disc golf as a form of exercise, the association aims to increase accessibility through the project by building stairs, walkways, and bridges to create a safe and passable course. Areas will be leveled as stones, pits, and stumps currently pose a tripping hazard. The goal is for people using walkers to be able to navigate the course.
Within the project, seating areas will also be built along the course so that players can sit down and rest. In the middle of the course, where several paths meet, a gathering place/stone dust square with benches and tables will be created so that it also becomes a social meeting place where people can gather and have a coffee. The participants in the disc golf 60+ group have engaged in the development of the course and have made many suggestions on what needs to be addressed for the course to become more accessible for them and other active individuals in their age group. The association has also been in contact with other pensioner associations in the municipality to gather their feedback.
Project goals
The goal of the project is for the disc golf course to have received stairs, walkways, bridges, and benches, thereby becoming an attractive and accessible activity for a new target group. The association aims to create a course that can offer the elderly and people with limited mobility a recreational activity that can lead to increased quality of life and expanded social interaction and inclusion.
